Allow me to re-introduce myself…..*queue the Jay-z track. Protege

After having amazing season last year sharing the BMW, Shawn and I decided it would be fun to find a second car so that we wouldn’t have to split our track time. Initially the idea was to find another BMW since we had learned so much and we knew the platform was a solid starting point. After missing out on a great sale, I shifted my focus to a Mazda Miata. The thought was that the miata has extensive auto-x background and great aftermarket support at prices that would be lower than those for the BMW.

Eventually though my dad had to step in and provide some fatherly advice. After pointing out that spending money on a car I am unfamiliar with when I had a great car already in my possession that I absolutely did not want to sell, I decided that I didn’t have to look any further, I already had my car – my 1999 Mazda Protege.

Project Background

I’ve owned the car for 6 years. In those 6 years I’ve put a bit of work into making it “my” car. I’ll post some pictures in the gallery section but here’s a quick run down of the work.

  • Custom MAZDASPEED body kit ( P5 sideskirts, ’03 MSP rear lip, 01+ mazda lip, autoexe replica grill)
  • Black housing headlights
  • Black housing corner lights
  • Tokico HP Blue struts
  • Evotion lowering springs (1.5 inch drop all around)
  • CosmoRacing cold air intake
  • B&M replica short shifter
  • Ractive Strutbar
  • Tsudo 4-1 Header
  • MAZDASPEED mid-pipe and axleback

I’ve put a little bit of work into the car already this year and I’m sure I’ll be putting more in as the season continues. Stay tuned!

I recently joined the  Loop’d Hookit Network, a social networking site where athletes and competitors can post their profiles and apply for sponsorships from various companies.

Shortly after I joined, I began to browse through the various “auto” related sponsorships and came across an offer from Go Pro. Seeing as I already use their Go Pro Hero Wide camera to film the team’s autocross and my snow-x action, I figured it only made sense to apply.

A week later, I am happy to announce that I am officially sponsored by Go Pro!

SOOO Pumped!

Jeff’s New Helmet

Posted by Jeff On May - 19 - 2009

With the auto-x season set to start next weekend with the driving school Saturday and the first race on Sunday, I figured it was time to get a helmet.

I took a drive over to Ottawa Goodtime Centre on Saturday to check out a few different brands/styles to see what fit my head and what felt comfortable. After trying on 3 or 4 different brands and finding out that I was a different size in every one, I ended up picking up this bad boy…

A Scorpion EXO-700 in matte black.

Driver Profile: Jeff Attala

Hey everybody – How’s it going ?

Protege My name is Jeff Attala and I am one of the founding members of the Eurotrash Motorsports team.  I have been surrounded by cars in varying degrees my whole life, but I only recently started to get my hands dirty.

I was born in Montreal Quebec, Canada but have lived in Ottawa for a little over 10 years now. Growing up in Montreal taught me a lot about driving – I’ll leave that one open to interpretation ;).

My first car was..are you ready for this?…a Pontiac Trans Sport Minivan. Yah the ladies really loved me in highschool…or not. The van belonged to my parents and it became my mode of transportation through most of highschool. That is until I got my REAL first car – a 1999 Mazda Protege LX with the 1.8L engine.

It wasn’t the fastest thing on the road, so my first priority was making it less of a “me too” car (e.g. I drive a mazda – Oh me too!!) I made the same intial mistake and went down the path of altezza lights and type-r mats. Most of those errors have been corrected.

My Mazda also introduced me to a great group of people at the Ottawa Mazda club where, for the past 3 years, I have served as one of the managers/moderators. I’ve met a great bunch of people, made true friends, and have learned a lot about cars….oh I also learned how to make fun of J-bodies.

Protege2 The club, and one pesky member in particular, are what got me into Auto-X in the first place. After participating in my first auto-x event last year, all my priorities for my car changed. I had considered going down the I.C.E road and trying to make the car a show car. Now I find myself paying attention to things like “slip angle”, “tread wear”, and “camber value”.

My racing experience prior to this endeavor is limited to say the least, but here are the facts.

  • Participated in a single auto-x event during 2008 season – Finished 14/23
  • Full season of auto-x during 2009 season – Finished top 10 in the rookie challenge and top 10 in C-class.
  • Lapping session on the long track at SMP to end the 2009 season

Believe it or not, I also have a professional side.

I recently graduated with a B.A. Sc in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Ottawa. I worked for a year at Environment Canada  dealing with certification emissions testing for vehicles sold in Canada. I am currently working in the Manufacturing Engineering department of General Dynamics Canada.

Needless to say, without my professional background I would not be able to enjoy the activities documented on this website. That being said, I look forward to seeing you at the track!

I can also now be found on Loop’d
