Lapping Evening – CMP July 9th

Posted by Shawn On July - 14 - 2010

Friday night, a 5-7pm lapping event was being held at Calabogie.  Of the Eurotrash team, there were Chris, Pat, Naresh, and myself driving, and Jamie came up to watch a bit later.  Having never lapped before, he wanted to get a feel for what it was.

To get the bimmer ready, I had taken the day of work.  My exhaust had developped a leak between the manifold and the midpipe, so I decided to just weld them together.  I realize that this is going to be an issue if I ever need to remove it, but I’ll deal with that issue when it arises.  Also, my front brakes were getting low, so I had purchased some new hawk pads to install.  Unfortunately, there was a shipping issue so those  didn’t arrive in time.  Thirdly, the truck manifold had blown out, and that was still in the shop being fixed by our good friends at Canadian Tire on Carling, so I had to borrow a tow vehicle from a coworker.

All signs seemed to be telling me that I wasn’t supposed to be doing that lapping day.  Well, there was another one on the track – my brother was the second car to stage, and I was the fourth.  He was let in front of the car from him early on, and I was as well.  With one car separating us, he was pulling ahead (not that’s its a race or anything, but still fun to try and pace each other).  I finally got let by the car, and worked on catching up to Chris.  When I did, he let me by right away.  A few corners later, I hear a clunk coming from the engine and my battery light comes on.  Then I notice that I had lost my power steering. THEN i noticed that my coolant gauge was starting to creep.  I quickly put my car in 5th and nursed the car back to the pits.  Thankfully I was able to shut the car down before the gauge got into the red zone.  However, once the car was off, the coolant temps kept rising, and stayed high for a while.  I assumed it was just the serpentine belt that drives the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump that had come off, and that it wasn’t a big deal as they have a part store at the track.

Turns out, the belt was fine!  One of the pulleys had seized and tore off the car, which caused the belt to slip.  That was the end of my night – 15 minutes in.  I was also concerned about engine damage as the temps were through the roof, but as the car wasn’t running, I hope it will be ok.  After letting it cool down, I fired it back up to get on the trailer, so at least i know it runs!

I’m hoping that no bolts broke, as that would require me removing the whole front end of the car to be able to extract them.  If I can simply replace the two pulleys and the belt, it should be a fairly simple job, and my car will be ready in no time.

Thankfully, no one else on the team experienced any issues and had a blast.  The track was damp, but there was no rain and it was a great evening.  I stuck around and went for in for a session with Pat and it was lots of fun.  Plus, we got more people hooked – Jamie will now be registering for the MCO lapping day in September!

Not sure if anyone took pictures, but if I find some I’ll post them for sure!

Driver Profile: Jamie Leveille

Posted by Jamie On July - 8 - 2010
Hey there,

My name is Jamie Leveille. I’m from Vancouver, British Columbia and I’ve been living in Ottawa since September, 2007 for school. I’m enrolled at Carleton University and am entering my fourth year of studies in Aerospace Engineering. I’ve been interested in cars and motorsports for as long as I can remember, but only recently have I been actively involved in any form of racing. In high school, my time was occupied and my competitive drive satisfied with hockey. I played competitively at the provincial and national level, so there wasn’t much time left over to pursue motorsport. Also, this would not have been looked favorably upon by my mother, whose roof I was still living under at the time.

The Car:
When I moved to Ottawa for school it meant the end of competitive hockey but also gave me time to act on some of my other interests. High on this list was getting a car, and using it. After my first year of school I was set on buying my first car. I was looking for something sporty, affordable, and versatile. The Acura Integra GSR, Toyota Celica, and Acura RSX were high on my list. I got very lucky in the fact that I had a connection with a used car lot manager, who happened to have a 2005 Acura RSX that he was trying to get rid of. He offered a good deal and I bought the car that day.

Since purchasing the car I’ve made some subtle modifications all aimed at improving its, err, autocrossability. I’ve installed a thicker rear sway bar, polyurethane motor mount inserts, two sets of front camber bolts, and adjustable rear camber arms. I’ve also invested in multiple sets of tires: the real go-fast bits.

The Racing:
When I first bought my car I had always planned to race it, somehow. Naturally my search for student budget friendly racing ended with MCO Autocross. I participated in my first Autocross event on May 24, 2009 (funny, I actually remember the date) and I’ve been hooked ever since. I haven’t missed an MCO Autocross event since that day and I’ve also travelled to Picton, Shannonville, and Blainville, Quebec to compete in regional and club level events.

I plan to continue with Autocross, though ultimately I’d like to get involved in lapping and Solo I (Solosprint) racing. The later will be with a new car entirely, so stay tuned.

So now you know a little bit about my past, present, and my future goals regarding motorsport! If you haven’t already, hopefully you’ll get involved as well.

See you at the track!

MCO 2010 AutoX Event 3

Back to back Autocross weekends – now that’s a way to spend a summer!

Last Sunday was the third MCO event and was it ever a scorcher.  The sun was crazy hot, and the water bottles were gone before we knew it.  The track selected for this event was very interesting – it involved two loops, an increasing-decreasing slalom, and several fun chicanes.  It was said that the track favoured higher powered cars, but everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

carnumber_108__original_filename_8We had a few different cars this week including two new racers.  My sister, Jess, decided to try her first race in her Toyota “Jellybean” Yaris, and one of mine and Jeff’s long time friends, Nick, decided to join us in his Mazda 3.  On top of that, Jeff was co-driving Naresh’s Mazdaspeed Miata, and Pat did a few runs in carnumber_157__original_filename_3another racer’s Miata.  It seemed as though the setup on the MX-5 was causing both of them some trouble, as they were both fighting to keep the car straight.

In A-class, we had Naresh, Jeff, and Phil, all driving red miatas.  With Jeff and Phil getting used to new cars, and Naresh having setup issues, all found themselves having some issues, but were having a blast nonetheless.  B-class was absent of Eurotrash drivers this week, but C-class had myself and Chris duking it out again.  This week, big bro got revenge!  Right from the get-go, I was feeling the car and I had found my sweet spot.  My times improved steadily throughout the morning, but in the afternoon I had a few sloppy runs where I hit a few cones.  On the 6th and final run of the day, everything came together and I was scored my fastest run which ranked me 3rd.  Chris also improved throughout the day, but was a few seconds behind me carnumber_270__original_filename_2(2.4 to be precise) and ended up in 7th.  D-class was a big battle between Pat and Jamie again – with Jamie coming out victorious once again and Pat close behing.  Our two new drivers – Jess and Nick – were fighting in E class and both did excellent considering it was their first events.  Naresh was trigger-happy with his camera again so we have have some great shots in the gallery.
